Bryan Innovation Lab at The Steward School

The Steward School in Richmond has become a leader in innovative education by providing their students with the Bryan Innovation Lab. Beautifully designed by 3 North, this unique learning facility promises to spark generations of innovators. The Bryan Innovation Lab has flexible indoor and outdoor classroom spaces designed to be adaptable as needs change. Upon arrival at the facility you walk through an outdoor classroom that teaches kids about growing food and managing storm water. There are multiple rainwater storage tanks, cisterns, that feed the raised gardens along side a bio-retention pond that is teaming with wildlife. Students can grab a snack on their way to class right off a vine while hearing frogs and birds in natural habitat. There are (2) 2,500 gallon cisterns that collect run-off and supplies (5) 300 gallon cisterns.

Once you arrive at the building you experience an outdoor classroom that features a wood stove and flex space. The wall to the first classroom completely open up to allow ultimate flexibility inside and outside the building. Inside the building there is an interactive cooking kitchen that would make Emeril jealous, moving walls to allow for a variety of classroom sizes, and radiant floors to keep things comfortable.

The systems of the building are highlighted with pipes that are painted so that students can figure out how water and electricity move through the building. Solar panels on the roof provide some of the energy needed and a geothermal system keeps it all running efficient. The mechanical room even has a glass wall so that students can see the guts of the building.

On the other end of the building you find two interactive maker spaces – although Cary Jamieson, director of the facility, says the entire building is a maker space – and it is without question. The Lutron shading system automatically controls natural lighting levels coming into the space. Haiku fans keeps the air moving comfortably. LED lights adjust with the level of natural light provided keeping energy bills low.

Trails are built around the building through the natural areas to keeps kids engaged with their surrounding. There are multiple outdoor spaces for learning experiences. The large amount of glass keeps the building light and the views preserved in all directions. The Bryan Innovation Lab is truly an excellent example of allowing architecture provide a platform for learning.

    This is where my niece goes to school, and she’s been taking biology and Environmental Studies classes in this wonderful building. To make things even better (for me), one of my close friends from high school teaches in the Steward science program and helped design some of the student-friendly features of this building. She gave me a tour right after it was finished… it’s even more impressive in real life than in the pictures. Let me know if you want me to put you in touch with her (Mary Fox Greenley) for your own “tour.” It’s about 2 hours from Harrisonburg. (I’ll be pet sitting for my relatives next week about a mile from Steward if you need a place to stay if/when you come to see it.)
